For the last three decades, designer Madhu Jain has revived Indian crafts and textiles within fashion. She's a craft revivalist and textile conservationist—which makes her one of the leading purveyors in the handloom space. Her passion for India's indigenous textiles witnessed various forms of Ikat and even re-introduction of Dhaka Muslin,
Her forte lies in developing textiles with distinctive combinations—creating a whole new textile. Acknowledged with the title of 'the first lady of Ikat', Madhu has now introduced world's first Bamboo Silk Ikat. The new textile is a result of 14 years of hard work and extensive research.
She harmoniously blended her signature work of Ikat traditions from Indonesia, Uzbekistan, and India with the bamboo textile. Madhu calls it the 'textile of future' which has anti-bacterial properties, natural UV protection and is suitable for Indian climatic conditions. "Bamboo as a fabric is fantastic, it's the poor man's linen. Also, the textile is biodegradable, eco-friendly, non-toxic and pocket-friendly," explains Madhu.
India is the second largest producer of bamboo and Madhu feels this fabric will provide livelihood options to many bamboo growers. ''I love the fact that this new textile does not eat into the earth's meagre resources,'' she concludes.
