Dharamshala: Residents of Dharamsala today take to streets protesting the shifting of Central University Himachal Pradesh (CUHP) from the area. They were protesting in response to agitations being held by residents of Dehra and Shahpur for retaining the CUHP in their areas.
The protest was carried out by academicians and students. The protesters said Dharamsala had adequate infrastructure for housing the university. It was just due to politics that the university was being shifted to Dehra, they said.
The location of the CUHP was a major electoral issue in the last Assembly elections. Minister for Urban Development Sudhir Sharma, who represents Dharamsala, had promised that the university would stay here.
He also made efforts and the state government proposed to set up the campus at Indrunag in Dharamsala. However, the site was rejected by the Centre. Now, a site at Jadrangal, about 20 kilometres from Dharamsala near Chamunda Devi temple and Dehra, has been finalised for the campus.
