The protesters demanded strict action against Vikas Barala and his friend.
“The government is trying to save Vikas by including mild sections in the FIR. Varnika is our daughter and we won’t let the government cover up the matter because Vikas is the son of a leader of the ruling party,” said Virender Kundu, a protester, while talking to mediapersons.
The protesters lifted the blockade after local administration officials assured them of conveying their concern to the state authorities. The khap members threatened to intensify the stir if no concrete action is taken in the matter by August 16.
Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, in a statement issued today, asked the BJP government to ensure an impartial investigation into the case and justice to Varnika, daughter of IAS officer VS Kundu.
Hooda, who is on a tour of Puducherry and Chennai, said the way Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections in the FIR were reportedly changed indicated that the Chandigarh Police were under pressure from the Central government.
He alleged that the BJP leadership was trying to save Vikas because he is Subhash Barala’s son.
“The BJP government should ensure a fair probe into the case and justice to Varnika. If this doesn’t happen, the Congress will launch a fight for her,” the former CM added.
Meanwhile, the chairperson of the Delhi Women Commission (DCW), Swati Jaihind, has written a letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, urging him to intervene in the matter and direct the Chandigarh Police to add relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code in the FIR, as per the complaint lodged by Varnika.
