Cabinet Approves Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana
What is Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana?– The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the “Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana”, a scheme aimed at promoting progressive agricultural practices. The initiative is in line with the Budget announcement for 2025–26 and will focus on the development of 100 districts across the country over a period of six years.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the scheme draws inspiration from NITI Aayog’s Aspirational District Programme and is the first of its kind to focus exclusively on agriculture and allied sectors.
Objectives of the Scheme:
- To enhance agricultural productivity
- Promote crop diversification and sustainable farming practices
- Improve post-harvest storage infrastructure at the panchayat and block levels
- Upgrade irrigation facilities
- Facilitate the availability of short-term and long-term agricultural credit
The scheme will be implemented through the convergence of 36 existing schemes across 11 central departments, in addition to State schemes and public-private partnerships.
Selection Criteria:
The 100 target districts will be identified based on three key indicators:
- Low agricultural productivity
- Low cropping intensity
- Low credit disbursement
The number of districts selected from each state/UT will be based on their share of Net Cropped Area and operational holdings, with a minimum of one district selected from each state.
Governance and Implementation:
Committees will be formed at the District, State, and National levels for effective planning, implementation, and monitoring of the scheme. Each district will finalize a District Agriculture and Allied Activities Plan under the guidance of the District Dhan-Dhaanya Samiti, which will also include progressive farmers as members.
These district plans will align with national goals, including:
- Crop diversification
- Water and soil conservation
- Self-sufficiency in agriculture
- Expansion of natural and organic farming
Monitoring and Evaluation:
The progress of the scheme will be tracked using 117 Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) via a centralized dashboard on a monthly basis. NITI Aayog will review and guide district plans, while Central Nodal Officers appointed for each district will conduct regular reviews.
The government expects that as outcomes in these 100 districts improve, the overall national performance against key indicators will also rise. The scheme is expected to drive higher agricultural productivity, value addition, local livelihood creation, and greater self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in the agriculture sector.
