Punjab and Haryana High Court on Paddy Lifting Issue Latest News: The Punjab and Haryana High Court reviewed the inadequate lifting of paddy in Punjab's mandis on Tuesday. During the session, the central government informed the court of an upcoming meeting with the Punjab government on October 31, aiming for resolution.
The court urged both parties to work collaboratively, given the issue’s state-wide significance.
Lawyers representing the Punjab government outlined measures being implemented to address the issue, while the central government stated it would distribute more rice by March. Earlier, the court had issued notices to the Centre, the Punjab government, and the Food Corporation of India (FCI) regarding the paddy situation.
This ongoing challenge for farmers coincides with the upcoming by-elections in four assembly seats on November 13, where political leaders have shown support for farmers’ causes, pushing for the lifting of 4 lakh metric tons of paddy.
On Monday, Aam Aadmi Party officials, led by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, urged Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria to press the Centre for accelerated paddy lifting.
The Punjab government claims to have lifted 4 lakh metric tons by Monday, depositing Rs 7,600 crores in farmers' accounts, and has directed officials to expedite paddy procurement in mandis. Last week, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also discussed the issue in meetings with Union Minister Prahlad Joshi and Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi.
