Haryana Farmers Organize ‘Training Sessions’ to Confront BJP Leaders Ahead of Polls

BJP candidates have faced angry crowds during recent campaign efforts.

Haryana Farmers Ahead of Assembly Elections 2024: In the lead-up to the October 5 Haryana elections, farmers in the state have been organizing "training sessions" to prepare for confrontations with BJP leaders during their campaigns. On Wednesday, Amarjeet Singh Mohri, a 44-year-old local farm leader, held one such session at a gurdwara in Mardon Sahib village, Ambala district, where around 100 farmers gathered to listen.

Mohri, who established the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Shaheed Bhagat Singh) in 2022, aims to arm farmers with questions to challenge BJP candidates about the government's handling of the ‘Dilli Chalo’ protests earlier this year. The strategy appears to be working, as BJP candidates have faced angry crowds during recent campaign efforts.

On September 22, Naraingarh candidate Pawan Saini’s convoy was surrounded by farmers on tractors in Fatehgarh village, Ambala, as they demanded answers. Other BJP leaders, including former state Home Minister Anil Vij, Assembly Speaker Gian Chand Gupta, and several other candidates, have faced similar pushback from farmers across the region.

Farmers’ anger is rooted in the police response during the protests, where authorities sealed the Haryana-Punjab border to prevent demonstrators from reaching Delhi. The government, led by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, was accused of using tear gas, pellet guns, and drones against the farmers, though the police deny the use of anything beyond tear gas.

The death of protester Shubhkaran Singh has further fueled resentment, with farmers determined to hold BJP leaders accountable during the election campaign.
