Jagjit Singh Dallewal Detention Ahead of Hunger Strike Latest News Today: In a dramatic turn of events, police detained Jagjit Singh Dallewal, a coordinator of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), just hours before he was set to begin a fast-unto-death protest at the Khanauri border in Sangrur district.
The 70-year-old farmer leader, who had announced the hunger strike to demand the legal guarantee of MSP (Minimum Support Price), was taken to Ludhiana’s Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) early Tuesday morning.
Dallewal’s hunger strike was planned to coincide with the fourth anniversary of the historic farmers’ protest that began on November 26, 2020, against the now-repealed farm laws.
According to farmer leaders, police action took place around 2:30 AM. Amrik Singh from Bharti Kisan Union (Sidhupur) alleged that the police broke the fibreglass wall of Dallewal’s temporary hut at the protest site. “The cops forcibly took Dallewal to an undisclosed location after he refused to open the door. More than 250 personnel locked other farmers in their huts or trolleys to prevent interference,” he said.
Sarwan Singh Pandher, coordinator of Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), condemned the midnight operation, which he claimed involved Punjab Police, Haryana Police, and central forces. “This is a blatant attempt to suppress our right to protest. We demand the Punjab government immediately disclose Dallewal’s whereabouts,” he said, warning of serious consequences if transparency was not ensured.
In response to the incident, Bharti Kisan Union (Sidhupur) and SKM (Non-Political) have called upon farmers to gather in large numbers at the Khanauri border. SKM has also announced 'Chetavni rallies' across 500 districts nationwide, in coordination with central trade unions. Furthermore, SKM and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha plan to march toward Delhi from the Shambhu border on December 6.
Patiala SSP Dr. Nanak Singh denied claims of detention, stating that Dallewal was hospitalized for medical reasons. “Due to his age and health issues, including cancer, we admitted him to DMCH for proper care,” Singh explained.
