Punjab News, Farmer Protest, Jagjit Singh Dallewal Hunger Strike Tomorrow: Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal is set to begin a fast unto death from Tuesday, November 26, at the Khanauri border. The move is aimed at pressuring authorities to address the longstanding demands of farmers and laborers.
Background of the Agitation
Farmer leaders have voiced their frustration over the government’s failure to implement previously agreed-upon demands. Highlighting the sacrifices made, they noted that over 750 farmers lost their lives during the historic Delhi farmers' movement. In addition, 33 more have been martyred since the launch of the ongoing Farmers' Movement-2 on February 13, 2024.
Since February, farmers and laborers have been demonstrating at key locations such as Khanauri, Shambhu, and Ratanpura, demanding Minimum Support Price (MSP) guarantees and other vital reforms.
Farmers Protest, Key Demands
The movement focuses on the following:
- Implementation of the MSP Guarantee Act as per the Swaminathan Commission’s 3²+50 formula.
- Complete debt waiver for farmers and laborers.
- Enforcement of the Land Acquisition Act of 2013.
- Provision of 200 days of employment annually for MNREGA laborers and linking the scheme with agriculture.
- Formation of a Spice Commission to regulate pricing and marketing of agricultural produce.
Farmers Protest, Nationwide Demonstrations Planned
In a recent meeting of the United Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), it was decided that peaceful demonstrations will be organized at district headquarters across multiple states starting November 26. These demonstrations will show solidarity with Dallewal’s hunger strike and amplify the farmers’ demands.
As the agitation intensifies, all eyes will be on the government’s response to the persistent calls for justice and reform.
