Farmers Protest in Chandigarh: The farmers' agitation continues in Chandigarh as the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) and the Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union hold meetings to discuss their next steps. Yesterday, a demand letter was handed over to Punjab's Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian and other officials. Following the submission of this letter, the unions are now strategizing their next move.
From September 1st to 5th, a Pakka Morcha has been organized by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) and the Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union.
On Monday, the farmers marched to the Legislative Assembly to press their demands. Sector 34 was filled with farmers and security personnel. While the farmers are on strike, police officers are stationed for the security of both the protestors and the city.
The farmers have set up their tractors and trolleys in the fairground of Sector 34, with beds inside the trolleys. Some are resting under the shade of trees, while others are taking shelter under their tractors. There was also a movement of farmers at the Gurdwara Sahib in Sector 34, where they offered langar (community meal).
As the protest continued, some participants arrived while others left. The traffic police remain on high alert to minimize inconvenience to the public. Jagtar Singh, the State Secretary of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan), emphasized that theirs is a peaceful protest.
"We have come for our demands," he said. "Despite repeated requests, the government did not listen, so we have come closer. The government will have to accept our demands," he said.
Throughout the day, the farmers in Chandigarh engaged in a determined struggle over the issues faced by Punjab's farming community. The protest took place on two different platforms: while the Mahapanchayat was organized by the Sanyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), another group of farmers, under the banner of Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) and Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union, marched from Sector 34 to Matka Chowk. Around a thousand farmers gathered in the fairground.
