Veteran Actor B. Saroja Devi Passes Away Latest News– Legendary actress B. Saroja Devi, who acted in over 200 films across four languages, passed away at the age of 87 on Monday, July 14. According to a report by The Hindu, the Padma Bhushan awardee took her last breath in Bengaluru.
Regarded as the first female superstar of Kannada cinema and fondly known as the “Goddess of Acting,” Saroja Devi was a towering figure in Indian cinema. She acted in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi films, captivating audiences for decades with her powerful performances.
Born on January 7, 1938, she made her debut at the age of 17 with the Kannada film Mahakavi Kalidasa (1955), and there was no turning back after that. She married Sri Harsha and is survived by their three children.
According to Telangana Today, she holds a unique record as the only Indian actress to have played the lead role in 161 consecutive films over a span of 29 years.
Throughout her illustrious career, she was honoured with the Padma Shri in 1960, the Padma Bhushan in 1992, and the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Government of India in 2008.
She also made her mark in Hindi cinema, sharing screen space with legendary stars such as, Dilip Kumar in Paigham (1959), Rajendra Kumar in Sasural (1961) and Sunil Dutt in Beti Bete (1964).
Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly and BJP leader R. Ashoka arrived at the residence of the late veteran actor to pay his respects.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his deep sorrow over her demise. “The news of the passing of senior Kannada actress B. Saroja Devi has caused deep sorrow. She gained fame as the goddess of acting, having performed in approximately 200 films across Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi cinema,” he said.
He added, “The moment one mentions Saroja Devi, her captivating performances in films like Kittur Chennamma, Babruvahana, and Annathangi come to mind. Her departure, after entertaining audiences for decades through meaningful cinema, is a significant loss to Indian film history.”
“I pray that Saroja Devi’s soul finds peace. My condolences to her grieving family and fans,” he concluded.
