For years now the debate over some Punjabi songs promoting drugs and gun culture has been going on. Society in Punjab has been under excessive pressure to ban these type of songs but are always unsuccessful in this matter.
Now, the police has stepped in and have decided that action against these songs promoting drugs, vodkas and gun culture will be taken. According to the officials, police will also start an awareness drive against such type of songs so that it may not have any bad effect in youths who are listening to these songs.
Additional Director General of Police (Law and order) Rohit Chaudhary had sometime ago told media that while the Punjabi culture do not glorify violence, some Punjabi singers were coming out with such numbers promoting intoxicants and guns. He further said that youngsters should avoid listening to these kinds of songs and he also further said that the police department will also appeal to Punjabi singers not to come out with such type of songs.
Many popular Punjabi singers like Jazzy B, Sarthi K, Babbu Mann and even the legendary singer Gurdass Mann has sung songs about liquor, opium and heroin. Jazzy B song feem which was released in the year 2013 compares woman eyes in using opium. Gurdas Maan famous song 'Apna Punjab Hove' also promotes liquor in his song by saying, "Apna Punjab Hove Ghar Di Sharab Hove". It was one of the superhit song of the Gurdas Maan.
Interestingly a research by a team of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) last year had concluded that majority of Punjabi songs are related to drugs. The team studied many songs that were listened by many youths and said that youths in the state have a high propensity towards committing violence and engaging in drug abuse.
The study also found that individuals who listens most frequently to the violent and drug-related songs had a negative attitude towards women and a high propensity to commit violence and high intent to engage in drug use. So thats why the police have decided to take a strict action against these songs which are promoting drugs, vodkas and guns.
