The forces of hatred have forced one of Bollywood's most creative depictors of history to bow down to the selective sensitivity of handful of people. The motive behind the strong reaction from this group is also questionable as to whether they are motivated by a real love for Rani Padmavati or Rani Padmavati is being used to further their own political ambitions.
Rani Padmavati holds a special place in history as she was brave enough to die for honour rather than giving in to amorous advances of Allaudin Khiizi. Khiizi was so besotted by her beauty that he fought a war for her. The story is not just about Rani Padmavati but also Allaudin Khiizi because if not for Khiizi, Padmavati would have just another royal lady.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali wanted to depict the love or lust Khiizi had for Rani Padmavati through a dream sequence. But the sensitive minds could not handle the creative depiction of history. They forget that Rani was not a Goddess but mere human being who made a choice which few would have made. They also forget that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is not a historian but a director well within his creative rights to depict a historical event as he perceives it.
The protests are being led by the descendants of the royal family of Jaipur who are now in BJP. They too forget that they are now just regular citizens of India who have to live by the law of the land and they are well within their rights to lodge their protests in a statement and not to see the film too.
But to encourage and support vandalising of sets and theatres and threaten the artists is not behaviour acceptable from an elected representative. India has a central censor board which is dispensing critical censor with more zeal than required. Now, if we allow the publicity-hungry politicians to threaten the creativity of the country, then the danger to the democracy is at an as critical level as the pollution in the air.
And the solution lies only with the government who can reign in their MLA and provide security and assurance to the creative talent of the country.
