Ram also defended freedom of speech, stating that it is meaningless without the freedom to offend.
Actor Raghu Ram has issued his first statement regarding the controversy surrounding the YouTube show India’s Got Latent, hosted by comedian Samay Raina. His response comes amid a probe into the show following outrage over Ranveer Allahbadia’s remarks in one of the episodes.
Raghu Ram’s Response
Addressing the backlash, Ram expressed that while he does not regret being part of the show, he wishes certain jokes had been left out to avoid causing offense.
"I do not regret being part of IGL. I wish the show had not included some jokes that caused such hurt. The sensibilities of a paying audience in a show can differ from a larger YouTube audience," he stated.
The actor, known for his role as a judge on MTV Roadies, clarified that he had no control over the show's content. "I might have kept some jokes out of the episode, but I am nobody to tell Samay or the makers what jokes to keep and which, if any, words to beep. It is their call, and I'm sure they don't take that responsibility lightly," he added.
Ram also defended freedom of speech, stating that it is meaningless without the freedom to offend. However, he expressed remorse if his involvement had caused any genuine hurt.
"Offence is often taken even when none is intended. But of course, I am sorry if I have actually caused hurt to anyone," he said.
Ongoing Investigation
Ram’s statement follows his recent appearance before the Maharashtra Cyber Department, where he was summoned as part of the ongoing probe. He is one of at least 50 individuals called in for questioning regarding the show.
The controversy erupted after Ranveer Allahbadia, popularly known as BeerBiceps, made a highly inappropriate remark in an episode.
"Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once and stop it forever?" he asked a contestant, sparking widespread backlash.
Following the outrage, Allahbadia issued an apology, admitting he should not have made such a remark.
Police Investigation and Summons
So far, eight individuals, including content creators Ashish Chanchlani, Apoorva Mukhija (The Rebel Kid), and Allahbadia’s manager, have been questioned by the Mumbai Police. The investigation was initiated after a complaint filed by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader.
Samay Raina, the show's host, has also been summoned but has sought additional time to appear, citing his presence in the United States.
Police Visit Allahbadia’s Residence
In a parallel development, teams from Mumbai and Assam police visited Allahbadia’s Mumbai residence on Friday but found the flat locked. Sources indicate that the Mumbai Police had asked him to report at Khar Police Station for questioning. However, Allahbadia requested that the interrogation take place at his home instead.
With the probe still ongoing, authorities have yet to register a case, but investigations are expected to continue in the coming days.
