Advocate Dhami Leads Efforts to Rally Sikh Community Against Death Sentence

SGPC News Latest: In a resolute move, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has declared a protest march from Gurdwara Sri Bangla Sahib to Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi on December 20. The march, spearheaded by Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, comes in response to the Interim Committee's meeting discussing the unchanged death sentence of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, urging clemency and his release.

Addressing journalists after the committee meeting, Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami emphasized the urgency of securing Bhai Rajoana's release. Despite efforts, the death sentence was not commuted to life imprisonment, prompting the SGPC to mobilize a large gathering outside Gurdwara Sri Bangla Sahib for a protest march to Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Advocate Dhami urged Bhai Rajoana not to resort to a hunger strike, advocating for peaceful means to express dissent. The SGPC's Acting Committee, following a special meeting recommendation, reinforced the appeal to avoid extreme measures.

National Participation in Protest March

Scheduled for December 20 at 12 pm, the protest march invites the participation of all Sikh organizations, religious entities, Sikh Student Federations, Nirmale Sant, Sewa Panthi, Kar Sewa, Nihang Singh organizations, and Sikh sangats from across provinces. The aim is to convey collective Sikh sentiments to the President for the release of Bhai Rajoana and other incarcerated individuals.

Advocate Dhami disclosed that during the protest march, 26 lakh forms filled by Sangats advocating for the release of Bandi Singhs would be presented to the President. This symbolic gesture is intended to amplify the collective voice and sentiments of the Sikh community, urging Presidential intervention for justice.

Commitment to Lead the Protest March

Asserting their commitment, Advocate Dhami stated that the SGPC would lead the entire protest march from Gurdwara Sri Bangla Sahib to Rashtrapati Bhavan. Political parties have also been extended invitations to join the cause and support the plea for clemency.
