Govt Urges Social Media Platforms to Combat Misinformation and Deepfakes

Rashmika Mandanna Deepfake AI Viral Video News: Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has responded to the recent viral deepfake video featuring actor Rashmika Mandanna, emphasizing the need to combat this 'damaging form of misinformation' and protect the online safety and trust of citizens. In a statement on Monday, the Minister of State (MoS) for IT underscored the government's commitment to ensuring internet users' security.

Chandrasekhar, speaking on behalf of the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasized that the Information Technology (IT) rules introduced in April 2023 impose a legal obligation on social media platforms. These platforms are mandated to prevent the spread of misinformation and promptly address user reports.

The Union Minister emphasized that it is the responsibility of all platforms to "ensure no misinformation is posted by any user" and, if reported by any user or government authority, misinformation must be removed within 36 hours. Chandrasekhar made it clear that if social media platforms fail to comply with these guidelines, they could face legal consequences. Under rule 7 of the IT regulations, "platforms can be taken to court by an aggrieved person under provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC)."

The deepfake video in question features 'Pushpaa' actress Rashmika Mandanna and has garnered over 14 million views since its online appearance. Journalist Abhishek Kumar shared the video on social media, sparking concerns and highlighting the "urgent need for a legal and regulatory framework" to address deepfake incidents in India.

The original video, which was posted on Instagram on October 9, features Zara Patel, a British-Indian influencer with more than 400,000 followers. The deepfake manipulates the video, making it appear as though Patel's face transforms into Rashmika's as she enters an elevator. The creator of the deepfake video remains unknown, adding to the mystery surrounding the incident.
