Fire Breaks Out in Kolkata's Iconic Eden Gardens Stadium, Raises Concerns Ahead of ICC ODI WC 2023
Incident Occurred in the Stadium's Dressing Room
KOLKATA: Just months away from the highly anticipated ICC ODI World Cup 2023, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) finds itself grappling with an unexpected setback. A devastating fire erupted within the historic confines of Eden Gardens Stadium, one of the venues slated to host crucial matches during the tournament. The incident occurred in the stadium's dressing room, sending shockwaves through the cricketing community.
According to the fire department, the flames ignited at 11:50 pm on Wednesday, casting a fiery blaze that took over an hour to bring under control. Preliminary investigations suggest that a short circuit triggered the inferno, causing significant damage to the dressing room's false ceiling and the valuable equipment and memorabilia stored within it.
The incident has forced a halt to all communications and activities within Eden Gardens, raising concerns about the readiness of the venue for the impending World Cup. The Cricket Association of Bengal had recently submitted a comprehensive security report to the International Cricket Council (ICC), earning approval for the stadium's preparations. However, this fire has placed a cloud of uncertainty over the overall readiness of the iconic venue.
Fire officials managed to avert a potential disaster, preventing the flames from spreading further. Despite their commendable work, many cherished items belonging to cricketers, along with essential equipment, were tragically consumed by the fire.
Notably, Eden Gardens was slated to host five key matches during the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, including a crucial semi-final. The opening match at this historic ground is scheduled for October 28, pitting Netherlands against Bangladesh, while the second contest on October 31 will see Pakistan facing Bangladesh.
