Elderly mother Jaswant Kaur appeals to PM Modi and CM Mann to raise the matter with the Muscat government
The family of Gurpreet Singh, alias Babbi, a resident of Patti Lower village in Roopnagar district, is in shock after it emerged that a court in Muscat has sentenced him to death in a drug trafficking case.
The family has appealed to the Central and Punjab governments to intervene, get the young man's sentence waived and bring him back to India. According to information received, the Indian Embassy in Muscat had sent a letter about the sentence to the Deputy Commissioner of Roopnagar. The family was then informed of the matter through the Tehsildar of Nangal.
It is said that Gurpreet Singh went to Muscat about four years ago in search of work and was employed there as a truck driver. According to the family, a case was registered against him in Muscat about two years ago after a narcotic substance was allegedly found in his truck. He is reported to have been in jail in connection with the case for the past two years.
After hearing the news of the death sentence, his elderly mother, Jaswant Kaur, has appealed to the government for help in saving her son. The family and villagers claim that Gurpreet Singh was deliberately framed, alleging that the narcotic substance was planted in his truck as part of a conspiracy. According to them, Gurpreet is a simple, religious-minded young man.
Gurpreet's mother, Jaswant Kaur, has met Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains and BJP leader Ajaiveer Singh Lalpura to seek assistance. She has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to raise the matter with the Muscat government and the concerned officials, and to take every possible step to secure relief for her son from the sentence.
