In Delhi and Tripura, the same posts have gone to Harsh Malhotra and Abhishek Debroy respectively.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is known for taking unexpected decisions in its organizational matters. The party has once again demonstrated the above-mentioned skill in the appointments of state presidents of four states including Punjab. The Punjab BJP president has been handed over to Malwai leader Kewal Singh Dhillon while Dr. Archana Gupta has been appointed as the president of Haryana BJP.

In Delhi and Tripura, the same posts have gone to Harsh Malhotra and Abhishek Debroy respectively. By appointing unheralded faces as the presidents of four important state units, like Bihar MLA Nitin Nabin replacing Jagat Prakash Nadda, the BJP's national leadership has not only given an opportunity to relatively young leaders to showcase their political ability and strategic expertise, but has also signaled that the party not only values but also gives due recognition to the performance of those who quietly but diligently do their work.

Kewal Singh Dhillon is the oldest of the four new state presidents. Dhillon, 76, was once an NRI. He brought multinational company PepsiCo to Punjab in 1989 and made it possible for the state to open its doors to foreign investment even during those dark days. Now his business has expanded far beyond PepsiCo bottler and business partner to real estate and other industrial ventures. He was a Congress MLA from Barnala constituency in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha from 2007 to 2017.

In 2022, he left the Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. The party was looking for Sikh faces in the politically most important Malwa region at that time. Mr. Dhillon's arrival gave a start to this search. Mr. Dhillon, born in village Tallewal in Sangrur district, is being seen by the BJP as a suitable leader who can challenge Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in his personal area. Only time will tell how much such thinking proves to be valid. However, by handing him over to the state president, the BJP national leadership has also assured former Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh that the party is not ignoring the interests of its close associates like Mr. Dhillon.

Mr. Dhillon's new responsibility is not small. Especially when the party is determined to remove the stigma of being a party of only the Hindu community in Punjab. Mr. Dhillon has been appointed in place of Mr. Sunil Jakhar. Mr. Jakhar had also joined the BJP after breaking ties with the Congress. As the state president, for the last one and a half years, he had been actively carrying out the task of putting the Punjab BJP on its feet. One proof of this is the aggressive stance of the BJP in the recent municipal elections.

Whatever the results of these elections that will be announced today, the Punjab BJP fought these elections with full fighting spirit and in many places created the impression of dealing a tough blow to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Political whispers have been indicating that Mr. Jakhar will get a national-level post. It is to be hoped that apart from such a post, the national leadership of the BJP will continue to value Mr. Jakhar's thinking and aesthetic while taking political, administrative and social decisions regarding Punjab.

Dr. Archana Gupta has chosen the path of abandoning orthodox beliefs by appointing the Haryana BJP president. She is known as a renowned radiologist and has been the state general secretary of the BJP. She has been playing a leading role in activating the Haryana BJP Mahila Morcha. Like Archana Gupta, the appointment of Harsh Malhotra as the Delhi BJP president can also be considered unexpected. The party had fielded her from the East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency in 2024 in place of Gautam Gambhir. Despite becoming a first-time MP, she was inducted as the Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways in the Union Cabinet. Her new appointment replaces Virendra Sachdeva. The nomination of one Punjabi instead of another is a sign for the Punjabi community of Delhi that the party salutes the role of this community in its organizational strength.
