Ottawa: Marking Sikh Heritage Month, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited a gurdwara in the national capital and joined members of the Sikh community in traditional sewa, reinforcing the spirit of service and inclusivity.
At Gurdwara Sahib Ottawa, Carney interacted with devotees and volunteers, taking part in community activities that are central to Sikh traditions. The visit was part of broader celebrations held across the country throughout April.
In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister acknowledged the significant presence of Sikhs in Canada, noting that the country hosts one of the largest Sikh populations worldwide. He praised the community for its role in strengthening social harmony and contributing to national development.
Carney emphasised that Sikh Heritage Month is a time to recognise the legacy and achievements of Sikh Canadians, whose efforts continue to shape the country’s multicultural identity.
Earlier in the month, Baisakhi celebrations were held in several cities, including Toronto, where the Consulate General of India in Toronto partnered with Virasat-e-Khalsa to host a cultural event attended by members of the Indian diaspora and community leaders.
The occasion highlighted not only religious and cultural traditions but also the enduring people-to-people ties between India and Canada.
Observed annually, Sikh Heritage Month serves as a platform to celebrate Sikh history, values, and the community’s enduring contributions to Canadian society.
