The honour was presented during the Prime Minister's official engagements in Norway.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with Norway’s highest civilian honour, the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, during his visit to Oslo. The award recognises individuals who have made exceptional contributions to strengthening Norway’s interests and international relations.
This marks the 32nd international honour received by Prime Minister Modi. The Grand Cross is considered the highest grade within the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, which is awarded for distinguished service in promoting bilateral and global cooperation.
The honour was presented during the Prime Minister’s official engagements in Norway as part of his broader diplomatic tour of European countries. His visit to Oslo also holds historical significance as it is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Norway in 43 years.
Earlier, during the same European tour, Prime Minister Modi was also awarded Sweden’s prestigious Royal Order of the Polar Star, Degree of Commander Grand Cross. The Swedish honour is among the highest distinctions given by the country to foreign leaders for their role in strengthening bilateral relations and demonstrating leadership in global affairs.
The series of recognitions highlights India’s expanding diplomatic engagement with Nordic countries and reflects growing cooperation in areas such as trade, sustainability, and international development.
Officials noted that the visit aims to further strengthen India’s ties with Norway and other European partners through dialogue on economic collaboration, climate action, and innovation-driven partnerships.
The awards add to a growing list of international recognitions received by the Prime Minister over the years, underscoring India’s increasing global diplomatic visibility and strategic outreach in recent years.
