The New York Police Department has established a restricted zone spanning from 40th to 45th Street between First and Third Avenues.
A high-rise construction site in Midtown Manhattan was declared unsafe on Tuesday, triggering an emergency evacuation of several surrounding buildings, including the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations. City authorities issued the precautionary order after concerns emerged regarding the structural stability of the tower, which is located in a densely populated area.
New York City officials described the situation as extremely serious. The New York Fire Department received initial reports of structural issues at the 42nd Street construction project around 8:00 AM local time. No injuries have been reported, and all construction workers were safely accounted for during the immediate emergency response.
Inspections conducted by the city’s fire and building departments revealed critical failures on the 21st floor of the tower, which was formerly the Pfizer headquarters. Two primary load-bearing columns were found to be bent, accompanied by significant cracks and sagging floor plates. Engineers have confirmed the structure remains critically unstable, necessitating a continued emergency presence on-site.

The 27-story Indian mission, designed by architect Charles Correa, stands directly opposite the affected construction site. While the area remains under lockdown, city engineers continue to evaluate the risks posed by the unstable tower.
