Solomianskyi District building collapse kills two; 35 people rescued from upper floors by emergency workers.
Russia unleashed a heavy bombardment of ballistic missiles and drones overnight into Saturday in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, resulting in at least nine fatalities and 22 civilian injuries, according to authorities. A fire started after falling debris damaged a five-story residential structure in the Solomianskyi District of the city. According to Ukraine's state emergency agency, 35 people were rescued from the building's higher levels by rescue workers; two people died and eight others, including two children, were reported injured.
According to the emergency services, the attack in Kyiv's Darnytskyi District resulted in fires, damage to homes, cars, and an administrative and non-residential building, and seven fatalities and fourteen injuries. Two additional city districts reported residential and commercial structure damage.
The Ukrainian leader stated late on Friday that he had a conversation with U.S. Vice President JD Vance about his meeting with President Donald Trump earlier this week in Washington, which Zelenskyy called "positive and productive." Zelenskyy posted on Telegram on Friday, saying, "The Russian air strikes on our country continue and air defense, specifically interceptors for Patriot systems against ballistic missiles, remains a top priority."
At a NATO summit in Ankara in July, Trump said the U.S. would give Ukraine a license to make Patriot systems, but he appeared to move away from that commitment on Friday. Saturday's attack on Kyiv came just two days after a large-scale Russian ballistic missile and drone attack across Ukraine killed 10 civilians and wounded more than 50 others and saw a Russian missile enter Polish airspace.
