Weather department warns of heavy to very heavy rain in Dehradun, Haridwar and hill districts over next three hours
Dehradun: Uttarakhand continues to reel under an intense monsoon spell, with the weather department warning of moderate to heavy — and at places very heavy — rainfall accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms over the next three hours in Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal and Uttarkashi. Adding to the concern, the Meteorological Department has forecast no let-up in rainfall across the state for the coming seven days.
No Respite in Dehradun, Rishikesh
The capital city of Dehradun and the pilgrim town of Rishikesh continue to witness relentless downpours that have thrown normal life out of gear. The Ganga, meanwhile, is inching closer to its warning mark of 339.50 metres, currently flowing at 339.12 metres. Authorities have stepped up surveillance along the riverbanks, with SDM Kumkum Joshi confirming that the situation is being closely monitored. Kanwar pilgrims have been advised to restrict themselves to designated safe ghats for bathing.
Landslides Cut Off Dozens of Villages
The relentless rain has triggered a surge in landslides across the hilly belts of Jaunsar and Pachhwadun. While debris has been cleared from four of the 12 roads that were blocked, eight motor roads remain shut, leaving nearly 40 villages cut off and their residents struggling with disrupted routines. A school holiday declared for Thursday came as welcome news for children, but farmers are bearing the brunt, unable to move their cash crops to markets — a slump reflected in the noticeably thinner crowds at local bazaars.
Several key roads across the region remain blocked due to landslides and debris. The Kalsi-Chakrata state highway has been obstructed near Jajrer hill at kilometre 10 following a landslide, while the PMGSY Kalsi-Dhoira-Deu road remains shut at multiple stretches between kilometres 2 and 8 due to debris accumulation. The Barwala-Juddo-Matogi road is blocked at four separate points between kilometres 2 and 9, and the Langha-Matogi-Madrasu road, maintained by the PWD Construction Division, Dehradun, is closed at kilometre 6. In addition, the Chakrata PWD-maintained road connecting the JPRR National Highway to Kata-Mundol is blocked at kilometres 9 and 14, while the Raigi-Kulha road remains shut at kilometre 96. Under Saya PWD, the Maletha road is closed at kilometre 5, the Saya-Kwanu road at kilometre 21, and the Shambhu-ki-Chowki-Panjiya road at kilometre 5.
