Punjab Police Seize 64.62 Kg Heroin, Bust Cross-Border Network in Amritsar
In a major breakthrough against drug trafficking, Punjab Police has uncovered a cross-border narcotics network in Amritsar and seized 64.62 kilograms of heroin, officials said on Saturday. Two accused, identified as Sarwan Singh alias Gujjar and Shamsher Singh alias Shera, both residents of the district, have been arrested in connection with the case.
The operation was carried out by teams of the Counter-Intelligence unit and the State Special Operations Cell, acting on specific inputs about the movement of a large drug consignment. Authorities described the seizure as a significant success under the state government’s ongoing anti-drug campaign.
According to Gaurav Yadav, preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused were part of a wider smuggling module with links extending beyond India. The network is suspected to be connected to handlers based in Pakistan as well as associates operating from Europe, indicating an international dimension to the operation.
Police officials said further investigation is underway to trace the backward and forward linkages of the module and identify other individuals involved in the supply chain.
A case has been registered at the State Special Operations Cell police station in Amritsar, and authorities said more arrests are likely as the probe progresses.
