Punjab Launches Massive Nutrition Support Scheme as CM Bhagwant Singh Mann-Led Government Begins Free Kitchen Kit Distribution to 40 Lakh Families

The objective is not only to support household kitchens but also to improve nutritional intake among children and vulnerable families.

In one of the largest household welfare initiatives undertaken in Punjab in recent years, the government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has started the distribution of free kitchen ration kits to nearly 40 lakh economically weaker families under the newly launched “Meri Rasoi Yojna”.

The scheme, formally launched from Sangrur’s Bhalwan village, is being viewed as a major step towards reducing the financial burden on poor, Dalit and backward-class families struggling with rising household expenses and food inflation. The initiative reflects the Punjab government’s increasing focus on welfare-driven governance and direct support to ordinary households.

Under the programme, beneficiary families will receive kitchen kits every three months containing essential daily-use food items, including 2 kg chana dal, 2 kg sugar, 1 kg iodised salt, 200 grams turmeric and 1 litre mustard oil. The objective is not only to support household kitchens but also to improve nutritional intake among children and vulnerable families.

Officials associated with the scheme said the move goes beyond traditional ration support models by including nutritional essentials that are often difficult for low-income families to afford regularly. The programme has been designed keeping in mind the everyday needs of households, particularly women managing family kitchens.

The launch of the scheme also highlights the Punjab government’s attempt to expand welfare delivery beyond conventional subsidies. Over the past few years, the Punjab government has simultaneously focused on free electricity, healthcare coverage, irrigation reforms and financial assistance schemes for women as part of its larger governance model.

During the launch event, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann reiterated that welfare measures were meaningful only when they directly improved the daily lives of people. He stressed that ensuring food security and proper nutrition for children was essential for building a healthier and stronger Punjab.

The state government believes that schemes like “Meri Rasoi Yojna” can play an important role in reducing household stress among economically weaker sections while helping families divert savings towards education, healthcare and other needs.

Apart from the food support initiative, the Punjab government also highlighted the progress of several parallel welfare and infrastructure projects currently underway across the state. These include the expansion of canal irrigation networks, uninterrupted daytime power supply for farmers, free electricity for domestic consumers and the ongoing “Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna”, which offers cashless medical treatment up to Rs 10 lakh.

Officials said more than 35 lakh health cards have already been issued under the healthcare scheme, while registration is also progressing for the “Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojna”, under which eligible women receive monthly financial assistance.

The Punjab government additionally used the occasion to underline its push towards infrastructure modernisation. Work on underground electricity cabling has reportedly gained pace in several areas, with the long-term aim of gradually making Punjab free from overhead power lines and poles.

The event also reflected the government’s continued emphasis on social welfare alongside infrastructure development, agriculture reforms and law-and-order measures. Political observers believe the latest initiative is part of the broader effort by the Bhagwant Mann-led administration to fulfil key promises linked to welfare delivery, affordability and quality of life for common families across Punjab.
