Samrat Choudhary Sworn in as Bihar Chief Minister, First BJP CM in Bihar
Samrat Choudhary was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar on Wednesday, becoming the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party to take charge of the state government.
The oath was administered by Governor Syed Ata Hasnain at a ceremony in Patna, which was attended by senior leaders of the National Democratic Alliance. The transition marks a significant moment in Bihar politics, coming after a long period of leadership under Nitish Kumar.
Choudhary, who served as Deputy Chief Minister before taking on the top role, has steadily risen within the BJP since joining the party in 2018. Earlier, he began his political journey in the 1990s with the Rashtriya Janata Dal before switching sides and strengthening his position within the BJP.
His appointment also reflects his organisational role, having served as the party’s Bihar state president in 2023. Over the years, he has built a strong political base, backed by both experience and party support.
He succeeds Nitish Kumar, who led the state for over a decade and recently moved to the Rajya Sabha, bringing an end to a long and influential tenure in Bihar’s governance.
Born in 1968 into a politically active family, Choudhary is the son of former MLA Shakuni Choudhary, while his mother Parvati Devi also represented the Tarapur constituency, adding to his political lineage.
Leaders within the ruling alliance expressed confidence that the new Chief Minister would continue focusing on development and governance, ensuring continuity in the state’s policy direction.
