The unexpected precipitation boost occurred despite ongoing El Niño conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean.

India recorded above-normal monsoon rainfall between July 1 and July 26, defying initial below-normal projections issued by the India Meteorological Department. Countrywide precipitation reached 238.2 millimeters compared to the long-period average of 233.9 millimeters, driven by persistent weather systems that maintained active monsoon conditions.

An analysis released on Thursday by climate research organization Climate Trends noted that changing ocean-atmosphere interactions driven by global warming are making monsoon forecasting increasingly complex. Experts emphasized that rising land and ocean surface temperatures enable active weather systems to absorb higher moisture levels, escalating the frequency of intense rainfall events.

The unexpected precipitation boost occurred despite ongoing El Niño conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Former IMD Director General Dr. K. J. Ramesh explained that unusual ocean warming in the western Pacific Ocean offset El Niño's suppressing influence, allowing cyclonic circulations originating near Myanmar to re-energize over the Bay of Bengal.

Additionally, increased activity from Western Disturbances drew substantial moisture from the Arabian Sea, triggering heavy rainfall across Gujarat and Maharashtra. These disturbances extended toward Tibet, increasing precipitation across the eastern Himalayas and compounding flooding risks in Assam and neighboring northeastern states.

Scientists conclude that interacting climate factors are reshaping traditional weather models. As global temperatures continue to rise, localized intense rainfall events and shifting weather trajectories are redefining the seasonal dynamics of the Indian southwest monsoon.
