Delhi Makes Commercial Vehicle Entry Costlier, Fee Raised to Rs 4,000 to Tackle Pollution
Daily entry of thousands of goods vehicles into Delhi is set to become costlier as civic authorities roll out higher environmental charges aimed at tackling air pollution.
Around 4,000 commercial vehicles enter the capital each day, and officials believe the revised fee structure could help reduce this volume over time. The Environment Compensation Charge, which is collected in addition to toll tax, has now been increased across categories.
Transporters operating heavier trucks will see the biggest jump. Vehicles with three or more axles will now be required to pay Rs 4,000 per entry, compared to Rs 2,600 earlier. Charges for light commercial vehicles and two-axle trucks have also been raised, from Rs 1,400 to Rs 2,000.
Officials indicate that the revised rates are intended to discourage frequent entry of high-emission vehicles and promote cleaner or more efficient transport choices.
The decision follows directions arising from the MC Mehta versus Union of India case, where the Supreme Court has been monitoring measures to improve Delhi’s air quality.
By increasing the financial burden on polluting vehicles, authorities expect a gradual shift in logistics patterns, which could contribute to lowering emissions in the national capital.
