Jammu: Relentless rainfall triggered flash floods and landslides across parts of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of at least four people while several others remain unaccounted for. Rescue personnel are racing against time to locate those feared trapped after homes were buried under debris.

Officials said Surankote subdivision suffered the maximum damage as heavy rain caused slopes to collapse, washed away pathways and damaged residential buildings. Emergency response teams have been deployed across the affected villages to evacuate residents and provide immediate relief.

A separate landslide in Lower Murrah engulfed another residence, leaving six members of a family, including homeowner Mohd Latief, missing. Search operations involving police, disaster management teams and local volunteers are continuing despite challenging weather conditions.

The severe weather also claimed the life of a minor girl, Iram, who was swept away by a fast-flowing stream in the Marhote area. In another incident, rescuers recovered the body of an unidentified woman from a stream near Dhundak Lathoong Bridge, taking the confirmed death toll to four.

Authorities said overflowing streams and unstable hill slopes continue to pose a serious threat in several parts of the district. Residents have been urged to avoid venturing near rivers, nullahs and landslide-prone locations until weather conditions improve.

Relief measures have been intensified, with teams distributing essential supplies and assessing damage to homes and public infrastructure. Officials are also monitoring vulnerable locations where additional rainfall could trigger fresh landslides.

The administration has appealed to people to remain vigilant and strictly follow safety advisories, as forecasts indicate that rain activity may continue over the coming days, increasing the possibility of further disruptions in the hilly region.
