India has solidified its rising stature in global higher education as 52 institutions featured in the QS World University Rankings 2027. This evaluation, covering over 1,500 institutions across 106 locations, marks a 271 percent growth since 2017, making India the fifth most represented system worldwide. While India still lags behind global frontrunners, it is outpacing all other G20 nations in the proportional growth of its higher education system.
Jessica Turner, CEO of QS, noted that these results showcase the vital role universities play in India’s long-term development. She emphasized that investments in research, innovation, and talent are translating into significant global visibility. According to Turner, as the nation advances toward its Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, these institutions are essential in shaping economic growth and technological leadership.
IIT-Delhi remains at the forefront, climbing to the 118th position globally. This achievement matches the highest-ever ranking for any Indian institution. In just four years, the institute has demonstrated exceptional growth, climbing 79 spots to reach its current ranking after holding the 197th position in 2024. Gains in Employer Reputation and Citations per Faculty were pivotal, reflecting a surge in both graduate employability and research quality.
The progress is increasingly broad-based, moving beyond the IIT system. This year, 18 Indian institutions achieved their personal bests, with 13 of those being non-IITs. Notable performers like Jamia Millia Islamia, BITS Pilani, and VIT recorded significant improvements, signaling a decentralized and highly competitive academic landscape across both public and private sectors.
Despite this momentum, internationalization remains a primary area requiring further attention. Indian universities continue to lag behind global peers in attracting international students and faculty members. Future growth depends on boosting academic standing and global outreach, ensuring India's research and expertise achieve their full impact internationally.
