Rekha Gupta urged residents to adopt metro and bus travel more frequently.

As part of a broader push to promote sustainable urban mobility, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday launched the ‘Metro Monday' initiative, encouraging citizens to shift towards public transport to reduce fuel consumption and pollution.

The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for fuel conservation amid global energy concerns linked to the West Asia situation. It is being implemented under the ‘Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan' campaign, which focuses on public participation in national resource-saving efforts.

To mark the launch, the Chief Minister began her workday using public transport. She travelled from Kashmere Gate Metro Station to ITO via the Delhi Metro and then used an electric feeder bus to reach the Delhi Secretariat. Ministers Parvesh Verma and Ravindra Indraj also joined her during the commute, symbolising government participation in the campaign.

Officials said the initiative is designed to encourage daily commuters to reduce dependency on private vehicles and adopt cleaner travel alternatives such as metro and electric buses. On the first day, several ministers and senior officials also travelled using public transport.

Rekha Gupta urged residents to adopt metro and bus travel more frequently, stating that collective action would help ease congestion and reduce pollution levels in the capital.

The government has also proposed supporting measures such as work-from-home options, restrictions on official foreign travel for one year, and a weekly ‘No Vehicle Day' to strengthen environmental outcomes.
