PM Modi to Address Nation at 8:30 PM After Parliament Setback on Women’s Reservation Bill
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 8:30 pm on Saturday, a day after the Women’s Reservation Bill failed to secure passage in the Lok Sabha. The address is expected to focus on the developments in Parliament and the government’s approach on the issue of women’s representation in elected bodies.
The bill, which proposed reservation for women in legislatures, did not achieve the required two-thirds majority in the Lower House. It received 298 votes in favour and 230 against, falling short of the 352 votes needed out of 528 members who participated in the voting.
The proposed legislation also included provisions to increase Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 816 after delimitation based on the 2011 Census, along with extending 33 percent reservation for women in state and union territory assemblies.
Officials said the Prime Minister is likely to share the government’s view on the bill and outline its future steps regarding the matter. The address comes after discussions in Parliament where members from different parties expressed differing positions on the proposed constitutional amendment.
The speech will be closely followed as it provides clarity on the government’s next course of action following the outcome of the vote in the Lok Sabha.
