Supreme Court Seeks Centre, LIC Response on Disability-Friendly Insurance Schemes
The Supreme Court of India has issued notices to the Centre and the Life Insurance Corporation of India on a petition seeking disability-friendly guidelines in welfare insurance schemes, asking them to respond within four weeks.
The plea requests directions for framing and implementing such guidelines and urges the government to ensure that welfare insurance policies comply with constitutional provisions under Articles 14 and 21. These relate to equality before law and protection of life and personal liberty.
The matter was taken up by a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, which agreed to examine the issues raised regarding accessibility of insurance schemes for persons with disabilities.
The petition also refers to policies like ‘Jeevan Aadhar’, which provides life insurance coverage to individuals who have dependents with disabilities, subject to conditions laid down under the Income Tax Act.
It further seeks inclusive, disability-friendly norms across similar welfare insurance schemes.
The case will be taken up after responses are filed.
