India is set to achieve a major milestone in sustainable transportation as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to flag off the country's first indigenous hydrogen-powered train. This historic inauguration is scheduled for July 17, 2026, from Jind railway station in Haryana, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's transition toward greener and more energy-efficient rail operations.

The hydrogen train will operate on the Jind–Sonipat route under the Northern Railway. According to an official directive from the Railway Board, the daily service will run as Train No. 74010, departing Jind at 7:40 AM and arriving at Sonipat at 9:40 AM. The return journey, Train No. 74009, will depart Sonipat at 10:40 AM and reach Jind at 1:00 PM.

The 89-kilometre route will feature 12 intermediate stops, ensuring local connectivity. The train will halt at Jind City, Pandu Pindara, Lalit Khera, Bhambeva, Ishapur Kheri, Butana, Khandrai, Gohana, Rabhra, Lath, Mohana, and Barwasni. These stops are designed to make the zero-emission service accessible to thousands of daily commuters across the Haryana region.

Technically, the 10-coach trainset is a marvel of indigenous engineering, powered by a 2,400 kW hydrogen propulsion system. By utilizing fuel cells that convert hydrogen into electricity, the train emits only water vapour. This clean technology replaces conventional diesel traction, positioning India alongside global leaders in sustainable, zero-emission rail solutions.

Following the inaugural ceremony, the train will begin regular commercial operations. This project reflects Indian Railways' dedication to modernizing its network, proving that cutting-edge green technology can be successfully integrated into the nation's vast broad-gauge infrastructure.
