A critical new report from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) has warned that the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region faces extreme weather risks during the 2026 monsoon season. Despite forecasts indicating below-average rainfall for several nations, the report highlights a dangerous combination of drought and flash flood hazards.

Often described as the "Water Tower of Asia," the HKH region is a vital freshwater source for two billion people across eight nations, including India, Pakistan, and China. Because this area is warming faster than the global average, the monsoon’s traditional distribution patterns are shifting, making the region highly susceptible to climate-driven disasters like glacial lake outbursts and severe droughts.
To manage these threats, experts urge governments to move beyond individual disaster planning. Authorities must prioritize integrated, impact-based early warning systems and local-level coordination to handle multiple hazards simultaneously.
ICIMOD hydrologist Manish Shrestha emphasized that intense, short-term rain remains a grave concern. Furthermore, senior advisor Arun Bhakta Shrestha stated that drought and flood risk management must now be unified to address the growing complexity of these climate-driven disasters.
