Kuno National Park Records First Wild Cheetah Birth Since Project Cheetah Launch
Indian-born female cheetah has successfully delivered four cubs in the wild at Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park, marking a notable development in India’s ongoing cheetah reintroduction programme.
The birth has been described as the first recorded instance of wild breeding under Project Cheetah since its launch in 2022. The female, identified as Gamini-KGP12, is around 25 months old and belongs to the second generation of cheetahs born in India under the initiative.
Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav called the development a historic milestone, stating that it reflects the increasing adaptation of cheetahs to Indian ecological conditions. He noted that the successful birth under natural circumstances highlights the progress made through structured conservation planning and scientific wildlife management.
Officials associated with the project said the development is significant because it indicates that cheetahs are beginning to adjust to wild conditions in India without human-assisted breeding environments. The minister further added that the achievement aligns with the core objective of establishing a self-sustaining population of cheetahs in the wild over time.
He also acknowledged the contribution of wildlife experts, veterinarians and field staff working on ground level for the reintroduction programme. Their continuous monitoring and management efforts have been crucial in ensuring the survival and health of the cheetah population.
The development is being seen as an important milestone for the cheetah reintroduction programme.
