Delhi’s homeless population is being prepared for increasingly harsh summer conditions as authorities roll out emergency heatwave response systems across shelter homes in the capital.

With extreme temperatures posing serious health risks, the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has linked shelter facilities with nearby hospitals and emergency services through a digital system integrated with the ‘Rain Basera App’. QR codes placed at shelters allow residents to quickly access medical help, emergency contacts, and control room information during crises.

Officials said this technology-driven approach is aimed at reducing delays in emergency response, particularly during heat-related illnesses such as dehydration and heatstroke. Information boards with helpline numbers and control room details have also been installed across shelters.

Alongside the digital upgrades, basic amenities in 197 shelter homes have been strengthened. Residents are being provided with regular meals, drinking water, bedding, and sanitation facilities. Cooling arrangements including fans, coolers, and water dispensers have been deployed to ease heat stress.

To further prevent dehydration risks, Oral Rehydration Solution packets are being distributed, along with awareness posters on their use during extreme heat conditions.

Officials said Delhi’s shelter system has a capacity of around 17,286 people, with nearly 5,500 individuals using these facilities annually, mainly migrant workers and homeless residents.
