New Study Warns Extreme Humidity Will Spark Deadly Heat Over Half of India During Monsoons

Historical data spanning from 1979 through 2021 shows that these volatile heat anomalies are already becoming increasingly frequent.

According to a newly released study in the journal "American Geophysical Union (AGU) Advances," rising global temperatures will trigger a sharp increase in volatile, humid-heat conditions across the Indian subcontinent. If temperatures increase by two degrees Celsius, extreme monsoon humidity will dramatically prolong summer-like distress nationwide.


The authors wrote that India’s northwestern and Gangetic Plain regions will face significantly more frequent occurrences of severe stress during the monsoon than in summer under a warming climate. They highlighted that hot-humid monsoon environments will rapidly expand to cover 53 percent of the country.

Historical data spanning from 1979 through 2021 shows that these volatile heat anomalies are already becoming increasingly frequent across domestic boundaries. This trajectory directly impacts vulnerable populations, transforming localized regional weather patterns into long-term systemic threats to human safety.


The collaborative climate research was conducted by teams from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar, Stanford University, and Purdue University. They concluded that these expanding seasonal overlaps present critical challenges to public health, workforce productivity, and structural climate resilience.


Uncompensable heat stress (OHS) occurs when extreme environmental humidity combined with elevated temperatures prevents the human body from cooling itself naturally through sweat. This dangerous state of thermal accumulation poses severe medical risks, leading to organ failure and death.
