Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay's wife, Sangeetha, on Friday pulled back from her divorce proceedings, submitting a withdrawal petition through her counsel when the case came up for hearing at the Chengalpattu family court.

Appearing via video-conferencing, Sangeetha told the court she did not wish to pursue the matter further and sought approval to withdraw her plea. The judge noted her submission, and with no objections raised from Vijay's side, went on to formally close the case — while granting her the option to approach the court again in future should the need arise.

Sangeetha had originally moved court last year, accusing her husband of carrying on an extra-marital affair with an actress. Her petition, filed under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, alleged that she had endured sustained mental cruelty, neglect and desertion throughout the marriage, and she had indicated she might add the actress as a second respondent if necessary.

The plea further claimed that Vijay had grown emotionally distant since 2021, treating her with disdain and effectively forcing her into "constructive desertion" — living apart from him despite still residing within the same matrimonial home. She maintained that the marriage had broken down beyond repair.

Vijay, a former leading star of Tamil cinema who stepped away from acting to pursue politics full-time, had married Sangeetha in a civil ceremony registered in the United Kingdom on July 10, 1998, followed by a traditional wedding in Chennai on August 25, 1999.
