India’s Fiscal Deficit Reaches 12.52 Lakh Crore by February 2026
India’s central government has recorded a fiscal deficit of 12.52 lakh crore rupees by February 2026, reaching just over 80 percent of the budgeted target for the 2025-26 financial year. This marks a decline from the same period last year, when the deficit had climbed to nearly 86 percent of the annual projection.
Government revenue collections have also shown steady progress. Between April 2025 and February 2026, the total receipts reached 27.91 lakh crore rupees. Tax collections contributed the largest share at 21.45 lakh crore rupees, while non-tax revenues accounted for 5.8 lakh crore rupees. These figures represent 82 percent of the total receipts projected for the full year.
On the spending side, the government’s total expenditure during the same period amounted to 40.44 lakh crore rupees. This covers more than 81 percent of the planned budget allocation.
For the current financial year, the government had aimed to cap the fiscal deficit at 15.58 lakh crore rupees, equivalent to 4.4 percent of the country’s gross domestic product.
