This field experiment marks a progressive step toward introducing modern generation currency across India.

The Reserve Bank of India will soon initiate a major pilot project introducing plastic currency notes of 10 and 20 rupees into the domestic market. Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary officially confirmed the government approval during a written Lok Sabha session.

Under this trial initiative, the central bank plans to issue 100 crore pieces each of the new polymer banknotes. This field test will carefully evaluate performance, durability, handling qualities, and public acceptance across various diverse Indian weather conditions before considering any future regular manufacturing.

Plastic currency offers significant structural advantages over conventional cotton paper money. Polymer notes last nearly four to five times longer, resist moisture, dirt, and tears, and substantially lower long term printing and replacement costs while providing superior security features against potential counterfeiters.

Addressing common public concerns, the ministry clearly reassured citizens that existing paper currency will continue in normal operation alongside the new plastic notes. There is absolutely no government proposal to phase out or demonetize traditional paper bills during or following this upcoming field trial.

This field experiment marks a progressive step toward introducing modern generation currency across India. If the preliminary pilot yields successful results, the central bank intends to release these durable plastic banknotes into regular circulation while maintaining complementary digital payment systems nationwide for everyday financial transactions and general daily shopping convenience.
