India’s telecommunications sector sustained strong momentum throughout May 2026, as the nation's total subscriber base climbed to 1.34 billion. This significant expansion underscores the country's deepening digital penetration, as major network operators continue to capture new users across both urban and rural regions.


The growth is evidenced by official monthly performance data, which shows a consistent upward trend from April’s figures of 1.33 billion. During this period, the sector achieved a steady monthly growth rate of 0.42 percent, highlighting the resilience and continued demand for reliable connectivity services among Indian consumers.

Broadband adoption also reached a new milestone in May, with the total number of users rising to 1.08 billion. Reliance Jio remains the dominant force in this segment with 529.6 million subscribers, while Bharti Airtel follows with 376 million. Vodafone Idea and BSNL also continue to maintain a significant presence in the market.


Wireless connectivity also experienced a notable surge, with total connections increasing to 1.29 billion. This category is diverse, comprising 1.14 billion individual consumer SIM cards, 131 million Machine-to-Machine connections, and 11.7 million Fixed Wireless Access points, showcasing the technological shift toward more versatile and interconnected digital infrastructure solutions nationwide.


Airtel led the new user acquisition in May, adding 2.98 million subscribers, while Reliance Jio added 2.25 million. Together, these two private giants captured nearly 94 percent of the 5.56 million net additions for the month.
