India’s WTO Trade Policy Review Report Set for July Release, Officials Say
India’s trade policy review under the World Trade Organization (WTO) framework is currently being prepared and is expected to be released around July, according to an official.
The process is part of the WTO’s regular Trade Policy Review (TPR) mechanism, under which member countries’ trade policies, institutional frameworks and macroeconomic conditions are assessed periodically.
An official familiar with the development said that a team of WTO Secretariat officials recently visited India as part of the ongoing review exercise.
Under WTO rules, trade policy reviews are conducted based on a country’s share in global trade. Major economies such as the European Union, the United States, China and Japan undergo review every three years, while countries like India are reviewed once every five years.
The objective of the TPR process is to improve transparency in trade policies and strengthen the functioning of the multilateral trading system through periodic assessment.
According to WTO data, India’s share in global merchandise exports has increased from around 1 percent in 2005 to approximately 1.8 percent in 2024. During the same period, its share in global commercial services exports has risen from about 2 percent to 4.3 percent.
The upcoming report is expected to provide a comprehensive assessment of India’s trade performance and policy environment in the global context.
