Unlike standard solar panels used for electricity, solar thermal technology captures heat directly from sunlight.

The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) has released a significant report titled Policy for Solar Thermal Energy for Industrial Decarbonisation. This study highlights the essential role that solar thermal technology can play in helping India transition toward a sustainable, low carbon industrial economy by reducing reliance on volatile fossil fuel markets.

Unlike standard solar panels used for electricity, solar thermal technology captures heat directly from sunlight. This thermal energy can be effectively stored and utilized for various power generation needs or specific industrial processes. The researchers emphasize that this method offers a highly efficient pathway for modernizing the energy infrastructure of the country.

Dr. Vibha Dhawan, Director General of TERI, stated that achieving India's ambitious net zero emission targets depends on empowering small and medium scale industrial units. She noted that these enterprises currently face significant technological and financial barriers that hinder their ability to transition to greener alternatives.

To bridge this gap, the report recommends launching a National Solar Thermal Mission. This initiative would provide a dedicated policy framework, long term funding, and strategic financial incentives. Such support is crucial to help smaller businesses successfully adopt clean energy solutions through pilot projects and market based incentives.

By adopting these recommendations, India can overcome current financial hurdles and foster a more resilient industrial sector. This strategic move toward solar thermal energy is a vital step in achieving long term environmental and economic stability for the nation.
