Income Tax Appeals Disposal Rises 29 Percent in 2025-26, Over 2.22 Lakh Cases Resolved
The Income Tax Department recorded a strong increase in the disposal of taxpayer appeals during financial year 2025-26, resolving more than 2.22 lakh cases, according to official data released by the Central Board of Direct Taxes.
The figure marks a rise of around 29 percent compared to the previous financial year, when 1.72 lakh appeals were disposed of.
A significant reduction in pending cases was also reported during the year. Out of over 1.51 lakh older appeals pending at the start of the period, more than 50,000 were cleared under a special drive, bringing down backlog levels by 33.49 percent.
In addition to appeals, the department processed over 1.32 lakh revision applications and disposed of 72,933 taxpayer grievances, with an average resolution time of 47 days.
Official figures show that more than 5.68 lakh implementation orders were issued to enforce appeal decisions, contributing to overall system efficiency. In total, over 10.26 lakh cases were resolved during the year.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes also noted that 219 advance pricing agreements were completed and around 1.56 lakh trusts were granted registration or re-registration.
The CBDT chairman said the department’s approach going forward will focus on data-driven and efficient tax administration under the revised framework of income tax reforms.
