The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has suggested revisions to the Information Technology Rules aimed at improving transparency in AI-generated media and reducing the risk of misleading or deceptive content online.

Under the suggested framework, the existing requirement for labels to be “prominently visible” would be replaced with a stricter mandate that identification markers remain continuous and clearly displayed for the full length of any AI-generated visual content.

The draft also expands regulatory oversight to include independent digital content creators, bringing them within the compliance framework and requiring adherence to official government advisories related to content disclosure and transparency standards.

Officials said the objective of the changes is to strengthen safeguards against synthetic or manipulated media while ensuring users can easily distinguish between authentic and AI-generated material across platforms.

The ministry has also extended the deadline for public consultation on the suggested amendments to May 7, giving stakeholders additional time to submit feedback, compared with the earlier deadline of April 29.

The draft will now undergo wider consultation before finalisation, with the government expected to review additional stakeholder suggestions alongside earlier inputs as it prepares to update the IT Rules governing AI-generated content and digital media regulation in India.
