India to Launch G20 Satellite in 2027 for Climate, Pollution and Weather Monitoring: ISRO Chief
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is preparing to launch a dedicated G20 satellite in 2027 that will focus on monitoring climate change, air pollution and weather patterns across member countries, ISRO chairman V Narayanan said on Saturday. The mission is designed to strengthen global cooperation in environmental data sharing and atmospheric research.
The announcement was made during an address at the Engineering Staff College of India, where scientists from ISRO, DRDO and the Aeronautical Society of India were present. Narayanan highlighted India’s expanding space capabilities and its increasing role in international scientific missions.
He noted that India has already set a record by successfully placing more than 100 satellites into orbit using a single rocket launch. He also mentioned ISRO’s strong presence in the global commercial launch market, with 433 satellites from 34 countries launched so far.
Narayanan further outlined India’s long-term human spaceflight vision, stating that the country is working towards a mission to send astronauts to the Moon by 2040. He said this goal reflects steady progress in launch technology, satellite systems and deep space exploration capabilities.
According to him, these developments are aligned with India’s broader ambition of becoming a developed nation driven by science and innovation. He added that the planned missions, including the G20 satellite and future lunar ambitions, are expected to further strengthen international cooperation in space research while enhancing India’s technological capabilities in the sector.
