OpenAI Report: India in Top Tier Globally for AI Usage, Strong Surge in Codex Adoption
India is emerging as one of the leading global markets for artificial intelligence adoption, with OpenAI’s latest capacity gap report highlighting strong usage of AI tools across coding, data analysis and complex reasoning tasks.
The report shows that AI usage in India is heavily concentrated in urban centres, with nearly 50 percent of users located in the top ten cities. Delhi-NCR has been identified as the leading region for ChatGPT usage, underlining strong adoption in major metropolitan hubs compared to smaller cities and rural areas.
India also ranks among the top five countries globally in per capita usage of reasoning-based AI applications, according to the report. Users are increasingly relying on AI systems for structured problem-solving, technical analysis and advanced digital workflows rather than simple interactions.
The findings further highlight how AI is becoming more deeply integrated into coding and data-driven work in India, signaling a shift toward advanced digital skill usage across user groups.
A significant surge was recorded in developer-focused tools following the launch of OpenAI’s Codex application in February 2026. Usage of the AI coding assistant in India reportedly increased four times within two weeks, reflecting strong demand among programmers and technical professionals.
Overall, the report points to a dual trend in India’s AI landscape, where rapid growth in adoption alongside uneven access, where major cities continue to dominate usage compared to smaller regions.
