Recent data shows cotton acreage reached 6.318 million hectares by July 5.

Cotton sowing in India has gained significant momentum throughout July, driven by a strengthening southwest monsoon across key producing states like Maharashtra. This surge is critical, as the Kharif season sowing had previously lagged by 23 percent compared to last year’s figures, raising concerns about overall crop output.

India’s cotton cultivation is geographically diverse, divided into three main zones. The central region encompasses Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh; the northern belt includes Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan; while the southern zone features Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.

Sowing patterns vary by region, typically starting in the north before moving south. While planting usually concludes by mid-July, the monsoon’s late arrival this season necessitated an extension of the deadline to July 30, providing farmers with a vital window to complete their sowing operations amid changing climate conditions.

Recent data shows cotton acreage reached 6.318 million hectares by July 5. While this trails the 8.2 million hectares recorded during the same period last year, the recent improvement in rainfall is rapidly narrowing the deficit. Experts note that the current surge in precipitation is successfully accelerating planting activities across the country.

While national acreage is recovering, northern farmers should monitor localized water availability, as the extension of the planting window requires efficient irrigation management. This uptick in monsoon activity remains the primary factor in stabilizing the season’s prospects and supporting the nation’s agricultural recovery.
