Kharif 2026: Government Assures Adequate Seeds and Fertilisers Amid West Asia Tensions
India’s agriculture sector is entering the Kharif season with strong preparedness, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has stated. Seed, fertiliser, and pesticide stocks are in surplus, ensuring smooth sowing operations across the country.
The government has already made available 185.74 lakh quintals of seeds, exceeding the requirement of 166.46 lakh quintals by 19.29 lakh quintals. Crops such as paddy, soybean, groundnut, maize, and pulses are all sufficiently stocked, according to assessments coordinated with state authorities.
Additional Secretary Maninder Kaur Dwivedi confirmed that over 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of agrochemicals are ready for use, surpassing seasonal demand. Fertiliser availability is also adequate, with approximately 46 per cent of the 390.52 lakh metric tonnes required already in opening stock. States have been encouraged to adopt bio-pesticides and sustainable practices.
A minor issue involving LPG for drying hybrid maize seeds occurred recently, but it has been resolved in coordination with the Ministry of Petroleum, ensuring uninterrupted preparation.
The Ministry is monitoring wholesale prices of key commodities. Essential vegetables such as tomatoes, onions, and potatoes remain within normal ranges and are showing signs of improvement.
Preparations for the Rabi season are also in progress, with government officials emphasizing continued stock monitoring and support to maintain food security despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia affecting global energy supplies.
